Short Review: Dreamland by Robert L. Anderson
THIS BOOK HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL! I was shocked by how disappointed I was by this book. I was quite excited to read this and I assumed that because it was about dreams and dream-walking, it would be right up my alley. I don't normally like the eery or the sci-fi stories, but this peaked my interest! Unfortunately there was very little I liked about this. I did not hate it and I do think it has redeemable qualities, but the characters and plot fell flat for me. I was especially disheartened by the directed the author went with the dreams. The whole dreamworld and dream king seemed very odd and out of place and I did not enjoy those sections.
Spoilers below-
Most of all, I thought that the ending was incredibly depressing with how Connor was only with Odea in his dreams...gosh...what kind of life can a person live when his girlfriend only lives in his dreams! what is he supposed to say to people? "oh yeah, my girlfriend only comes around at night...when I'm sleeping...in my dreams..." as if people did not think he was crazy enough!!
Lastly in my frustration, I felt that the separation between Part 3 and Part 4 was a cheat. In between the parts, several decisions are made that are not explained and are breezed over. I did not like this decision and was irritated by it.
I did like the initial premise and I thought that the superstitious business was interesting, freaky, but interesting. I do not think this is an objectively bad book, but it was not for me at all
