Short Review: Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard

I cannot say I am in love with this book. I wanted to love it, I expected to love it, but it fell a little flat for me. I did really enjoy the story. The characters were enjoyable and intriguing (especially Eleanor whose character arc astounded me!) and the writing was fun and appropriate to the era in which the story is set. I loved the level of action that flowed through the entire novel and how kick-butt most of the characters were. The twists were well done and albeit semi-predictable, they were also fun and exciting. the story was definitely fast paced and gripping which I loved! I especially liked how Daniel and Eleanor's relationship temporarily wrapped up at the end-- I thought it was a smart choice and fitting ending. I also really liked the walking dead aspect, much more than I thought I would, and all of the electricity/magic stuff as well. I honestly thought that the entire story was masterfully crafted and well put together! the reason I gave four stars rather than five was because this wasn't quite a love worthy book for me. I think that the series has a bucketload of potential and the following books could be even better, but this story felt a little too light for its topic and its betrayals and drama. I also did not feel so much emotion when reading this which took away from my enjoyment of it. Still, I really enjoyed the story and look forward to continuing on with the series! I would recommend this to readers who liked the Infernal Device series by Cassandra Clare, but I caution them to not expect the same reaction to the book! 4/5 stars
